Mit seinen urbanen Projekten hat Olafur Eliasson schon häufig für Furore gesorgt. Ob er das Wasser der Bucht vor Stockholm vorübergehend grün färbt, bei Utrecht einen doppelten Sonnenuntergang erzeugt, mit dem "Weather Project" die Sonne in die Tate Modern in London holt oder in New York Wasserfälle errichtet, stets ist seine Kunst eine Irritation für den routinierten Blick des Betrachters im städtischen Umfeld. Seit einigen Wochen kann man nun auch in Berlin zahlreiche Installationen des Künstlers entdecken. Ohne jeden Kommentar stehen und liegen rätselhafte Objekte im urbanen Raum: verspiegelte Fahrräder, riesige Treibholz-Stämme und ein vereister und verglaster Pavillon. All das ist Teil von Eliassons Ausstellung "Innen Stadt Außen", dass zahlreiche Installationen im Stadtraum Berlin mit seinen Arbeiten im Berliner Martin-Gropius-Bau verknüpft. Kulmination seiner großen Hommage an die Stadt Berlin, in der er seit 1994 lebt und arbeitet, ist der von ihm selbst herausgegebene mehr als 400-seitige Katalog, der als hinreissendes, großformatiges Bilderbuch den Leser nicht nur an Eliassons illusionistische Räume im Martin-Gropius-Bau erinnert, sondern ihn teilnehmen lässt an der Suche nach öffentlichen Orten, an denen Eliasson die Menschen auf erstaunliche Weise mit seinen Interventionen für ihre Stadt sensibilisiert. Die zwischen die Bildkapitel einstreuten Texte und Interviews geben Einblick in Eliassons künstlerische Praxis und Methode. Olafur Eliasson's urban projects often cause furore. Whether through temporarily colouring the water of a canal in Stockholm green, creating a double sunset in Utrecht or building waterfalls in New York, his art is always somewhat bewildering to eyes accustomed to the typical urban landscape. Since last autumn a number of installations by the artist can now also be discovered in Berlin. The mysterious objects stand and lie within the urban context without any signage or labelling: mirrored bicycles, huge driftwood tree trunks and an iced and a glazed pavilion. These are all part of Eliasson's exhibition "Innen Stadt Außen" (Inner City Out), which connects numerous installations in Berlin's urban space with works inside the Martin-Gropius-Bau. The Intention of the artist, who has been living and working in Berlin since 1994, is to sensitise people to their environment. Physical phenomena in nature - light, water, reflections, time and movement - are all elements of his artistic work. Eliasson sees art as a public matter: rather than just inviting people into the museum, he also takes his art works to where people are. This publication is an analysis of Eliasson's artistic practise, but also of the relationship between urban space and the museum in general. The volume contains contributions by Daniel Birnbaum, Lorraine Daston, Olafur Eliasson and Regula Lüscher as well as a discussion between Mark Wigley, the artist and the curator Daniel Birnbaum. This book, conceived by the artist and designed by Heimann und Schwantes, presents the complete Gropius-Bau exhibition and all of the projects in Berlin's urban spaces on over 200 colour plates.
