This work focuses on analysing linguistic mechanisms (structural, semantic, rhetorical) used in the formation of historical synonyms of
in English. It also accounts for historical and cultural variations in the approach to sex relations. The analysis comprises synonyms dating from Old English up to Early Modern English.
