James Paul Gee retired from academics in 2020 to live and work on his small farm. He was the Mary Lou Fulton Presidential Professor of Literacy Studies and a Regents' Professor at Arizona State University, USA, and is an elected member of the National Academy of Education. He received his PhD in theoretical linguistics from Stanford University in 1975. In his career he was tenured at seven universities and held endowed chairs in three of them. He has published widely in linguistics, social theory, learning science, education, and on video games and learning.
