He previously served as a Senior Advisor to the Carter White House; taught at Columbia University, Harvard University, and the University of California at Berkeley, USA; and served as the President of the American Sociological Association. In 2001, he was named among the top 100 American intellectuals as measured by academic citations in Richard Posner's book, Public Intellectuals (2002). He is the author of numerous books, including The Moral Dimension (1990) and My Brother's Keeper (2003)
